Many authors stress the importance of situational variables on brand choice, but still some unexplained variance remains. In the recent past much research focussed on customer value delivery on multiple dimensions, namely benefits. They include functional, emotional and social benefits. This viewpoint on perception of benefits is different from evaluation of mere product attributes in that customer value includes judgements of a branded product on a more abstract basis, that is, the consumer translates these characteristics into a subjective meaning. For example, the consumer interprets the objective price as cheap or expensive, which is reflected in value for money of the branded product. Furthermore the consumer might not switch brands because of different colors or shapes of the product or the brand name but rather because of what these attributes communicate to others, which is reflected by social benefit. Accordingly, it is postulated that consumers are guided by benefits sought when choosing branded products and customers perceive brands in terms of benefits provided. Thus, the present study addresses the question of whether benefits sought by consumers influence brand switching behavior. This relationship is investigated across four frequently purchased product groups. Furthermore, in order to shed more light into benefits sought by various consumer groups, consumer characteristics such as demographics and lifestyle are included in the research. This thesis also investigates if consumer characteristics determine brand choice. The phenomenon of brand switching has long been of interest to marketing researchers (Bass 1974). A knowledge of the pattern of switching among brands serves as the basic input in studying a variety of marketing issues including market structure analysis (Grover and Srinivasan 1987; Jain, Bass, and Chen 1990; Kalwani and Morrison 1977; Lehmann 1972; Rao and Sabavala 1981), determining the effectiveness of marketing actions and developing marketing strategies (Carpenter and Lehmann 1985; Colombo and Morrison 1989; Zufryden 1986), and understanding household purchase behavior (Givon 1984; Jeuland 1979; Lattin and McAlister 1985). The early efforts at modeling brand-switching behavior (e. . , Kuehn 1962; Morrison 1966) provided a useful, parsimonious representation of the influence of the immediate past purchase on the current purchase. However, those studies were limited to the extent that they did not incorporate the effects of explanatory variables such as price, feature advertisements, special displays, and household-specific characteristics on the transition probabilities. A co nsiderable body of evidence shows that choice probabilities are influenced by marketing and other variables (e. g. , Guadagni and Little 1983). Such explanatory variables therefore must be included in any analysis of brand-switching behaviour. When marketing mix variables have a significant impact on brand-switching behaviour and when they change over time, the transition probabilities will be non stationary. This property adds an extra element of complexity to the empirical analysis as it is not possible to estimate the transition probabilities from an aggregate brand-switching matrix. One of our objectives, therefore, is to present a framework that can accommodate non stationary transition probabilities. Another important component of the dynamics of a households purchase behaviour is the purchase-timing decision. Accordingly, several models have been developed over the years to characterize the probability distribution underlying the interpurchase times (e. g. , Chatfield and Goodhardt 1973; Dunn, Reader, and Wrigley 1983; Ehrenberg 1959; Helsen and Schmittlein 1989; Herniter 1971; Jain and Vilcassim 1991; Jeuland, Bass, and Wright 1980; Lawrence 1980; Zufryden 1978; among others). A noteworthy aspect of these studies is that the brand choice decision is not investigated jointly with the purchase-timing decision. Likewise, most studies that have analyzed brand choice behavior (e. g. , Guadagni and Little 1983; Krishnamurthi and Raj 1988; Zufryden 1986) have not modeled the timing of purchases. The exception is the study by Gupta (1988), in which brand choice and purchase timing are both considered. As argued by Hauser and Wisniewski (1982), purchase timing and brand choice are mutually dependent and both household-level decisions are influenced by managerial controls such as coupons, price, special displays, and feature advertisements, as well as by household-specific characteristics. Household brand-switching and purchase-timing decisions may be affected by unobserved factors. For example, the brand choice decisions of a household are influenced by the structure of preferences of household members, but the preference structure cannot be observed. Only choices made or the revealed preferences can be observed. Further, two households with the same household characteristics, when confronted with the same choice situation, may make different choicesthey respond differently to the marketing controls of sellers. One way of capturing this phenomenon of unobserved heterogeneity is to develop and estimate a model for each household. However, in most practical situations this approach would not be feasible because of the lack of a sufficient number of observations on purchases for each household. If the parameters were estimated with short purchase strings for each household, the estimates would have serious small-sample problems (i. e. , bias, inefficiency). Moreover, a homogeneous aggregate model would fail to capture the heterogeneity across households. A reasonable compromise is to allow some parameters to be the same for all households, but let certain other parameters (generally, a single parameter) vary across households. The latter set of parameters would capture the unobserved heterogeneity across households. Substantively, this compromise is important because the estimates of the included explanatory variables would be contaminated if unobserved heterogeneity were omitted from the specification (Heckman and Singer 1984; Lancaster 1979). We note that previous studies of brand switching have not considered the effects of unobserved heterogeneity. The objective of our study therefore is to build on previous studies and complement them by developing a single framework to analyze brand-switching patterns and purchase-timing decisions of households, while incorporating the effects of marketing mix variables, household-specific characteristics, and unobserved heterogeneity. We analyze brand-switching behavior as a Markov process. The brand choice decision is handled via a finite discrete-state space. However, unlike a Markov chain formulation in which the time between transitions is fixed, our analysis treats the time between transitions as a random variable that follows some probability distribution. The resulting formulation is therefore a semi-Markov model that incorporates in a single framework both purchase timing and brand switching. We note that such a general semi-Markov formulation has been suggested by Hauser and Wisniewski (1982). However, their formulation posed certain difficult, if not intractable, econometric estimation problems. Our work builds on their approach, but we reformulate the semi-Markov model as a proportional hazard model in continuous time (Cox 1972). The advantage is that the econometric estimation of a proportional hazard model is more tractable than that of a semi-Markov model. Further, the proportional hazard formulation enables us to test easily among competing probability distributions for the inter purchase times that have been proposed in the literature. The proportional hazard model has been used widely in the social sciences to analyse problems involving duration data (Heckman and Singer 1984; Lancaster 1979; among others). Such a model has been used to study household purchase-timing decisions at the product-category level (Jain and Vilcassim 1991). The Hardy Boys' series of books was my choice of reading material. The books chosen were Rigged for Revenge (Hardy Boys Casefiles) and Hunting for Hidden Gold (Hardy Boys revised a hardback book). These books are very similar because they are both mysteries, have a lot of the same characters, and plot Developments of investigative work by the Hardy brothers. The author (Franklin W. Dixon [Leslie McFarlane]) and the series of books, on the other hand, has an interesting story behind them. The stories were created in 1927 by Edward Stratemeyer, who also created Nancy Drew, Tom Swift, the Rover Boys, and dozens of other memorable characters. The Hardy Boys remain popular today with well over 250 titles published. Their adventure continues in three series of paperback books (The Hardy Boys, The Hardy Boys Casefiles, Frank & Joe Hardy: The Clues Brothers) as well as the revised hardcover books published by Grosset Starting in 1959, the first 38 stories were revised. The series has been published the world over in many languages. The Hardy Boys is the all-time best-selling series of books for boys. In 1927, the first three "breeder" volumes of the Hardy Boys were released. The stories were written by Canadian newspaper writer, Leslie McFarlane, who was hired by Edward Stratemeyer to ghostwrite the stories from Stratemeyer's outlines. McFarlane continued to write the stories, with brief interruption, for 20 years. Leslie McFarlane eventually wrote the original texts for most of the first 26 volumes in the series. After the late 1940's, the Stratemeyer Syndicate (then run by Harriet S. Adams) hired a variety of other writers to work on The Hardy Boys. Few of them had McFarlane's gift for detail and humor, and the later volumes are less fun to read. The fun was further squeezed out of the books in 1959, when Adams decided her series needed updating and recruiting. She was correct in some ways; the early Hardy Boys, Nancy Drews, etc. had not been written with the knowledge that they would still be in print thirty years later. By then, times had changed so much that many details in the original stories were too old-fashioned, and risked alienating young readers. The obvious racism of the earlier books was insulting to adults, who sent angry letters to Adams, protesting her books' chilling portrayals of Blacks, Asians, and Latinos. Wanting her books to remain welcome , Adams set about a massive revision project which lasted for several years. Each Hardy Boys book (and Nancy Drew, and Bobbsey Twins) was re-written. Some received entirely new plots. The Hardys and Drews continued for another 20 years to be Gosset & Dunlap's best-selling juveniles. The Stratemeyer Syndicate took full credit for the name (Franklin W. Dixon) . However, the origin of Franklin W. Dixon, came from Leslie McFarlane naming himself after two of his brothers (Frank- [Franklin], and Wilmot [also known as Dick] [both the W. and the Dixon]). He also wrote some of Ted Scott's books, and other series work (Dana's, etc.). He once mentioned that he penned a couple of Nancy Drew's books. This caused quite a furor in the NewsGroup, as the identities of the various Carolyn Keene's over the years have had a certain cloud of mystery around them. Every year, they cause millions of dollars in  damage to dwellings by tunneling into decks, porches, and other wood structures. They can also be aggressive, especially during mating season, and will fly very close to human beings and even bump into them. Fortunately, they rarely if ever sting people and their nests can be removed. Carpenter Bee Basics There are several species of carpenter bee in the United States, but the most common one is the Virginia carpenter bee (Xylocopa virginica). These bugs are found throughout the Southeast but range as far as Connecticut to the north and Texas in the west. Carpenter bees range in size from about 5/8 of an inch to 1 inch and look very similar to bumblebees, but theyre not the same.   Bumblebees (genus Bombus) nest in the ground, usually in abandoned rodent nests, and live in social communities. Carpenter bees (genus Xylocopa) are solitary bees that burrow into wood. You can differentiate the two by examining the dorsal (upper) side of the abdomen. If its shiny and hairless, its a carpenter bee. A bumblebee, by contrast, has a hairy abdomen. Both are considered beneficial insects because they are  excellent plant  pollinators. Therefore, you should avoid eliminating these insects unless absolutely necessary. Carpenter bees usually live for about one year. Each new generation is hatched in the late summer, emerging from nests in August and September to grow and feed, pollinating flowers as they go  before  settling in for the winter and hibernating. Survivors emerge in April and May to mate. The female carpenter bee excavates a tunnel for her offspring. In each brood chamber, she stores food and lays an egg. Having reproduced, adult carpenter bees die off in July, leaving the new generation to continue the cycle when they emerge a month or so later. Most people encounter carpenter bees during April and May when theyve just emerged to mate. During this time, male carpenter bees tend to hover around nest openings, looking for receptive females. It can be rather unnerving being around them, as the males will also hover aggressively around people who approach the nests. They may even fly right into you. Despite this tough act, male carpenter bees cannot sting. Female carpenter bees can sting, but almost never do. How to Identify Nests If you see a bee emerging from a hole in the ground or within a structure, thats a good indication that youre looking at a carpenter bee nest. To be certain,  look at the entrance holes. A carpenter bee makes an entrance hole slightly bigger than her body, or just about  ½ inch in diameter. The first inch or two of the tunnel is usually made against the wood grain. The bee will then make a right turn and extend the tunnel another 4 to 6 inches in the direction of the wood grain. Carpenter bees will often eliminate their waste before entering their nest, so you might see yellow stains on the surface of the wood, just below the entrance hole. Stavros Markopoulos / Getty Images Though they burrow into wood, carpenter bees dont eat wood like termites do. Since their nest tunnels are limited in size, they rarely do serious structural damage. However, because such excavation requires a lot of energy on her part, a female carpenter bee will often prefer to refurbish an old tunnel to digging a new one. If carpenter bees are allowed to tunnel in the same structure year after year, however, the cumulative damage can be significant.   How to Control Carpenter Bees Your best defense is a good offense. Carpenter bees prefer to excavate untreated, unfinished wood. You can prevent carpenter bees from nesting in the first place by painting or varnishing your homes exterior. If an infestation has occurred, you will need to use an insecticide to eliminate the carpenter bees. Many professionals recommend sprays or dust, which can reach the interior surface of the entrance holes. Apply the pesticide at dusk, when carpenter bees are less active.   For the insecticide to work, the bees much come in contact with it as they crawl through the entrance hole of the nest. Apply the appropriate insecticidal dust in the spring, just before adults emerge to mate. Once you see the bees emerge, wait a few days before filling in the nest holes with wood putty or filler. If you didnt apply the insecticide before the spring adults emerged, you will need to treat the nests in the spring, and again in late summer, when the next generation of adults is foraging. In the fall, seal the nest holes with steel wool, then close off the hole with putty, wood filler, fiberglass, or asphalt.   A professional pest control service is your best choice, especially if you have a large infestation because theyll have specialized tools that can reach deep into crevices. However, if you want to do it yourself, any name-brand insecticide formulated to kill flying insects should work. If youd prefer to use a natural remedy, there are several, including boric acid,  Diatomaceous earth, and citrus spray. The Good Life In The Good Earth, by Pearl S, Wang Lung the main character is a poor peasant who buys a wife and moves up in the social ladder during the peasants' revolution. This story displays many major ideas of ancient Chinese culture, such as the social order, the treatment of women, and the role of the family in everyday life. At the beginning of the movie the following quote appears on the screen "The soul of a great nation is expressed in the life of its humblest people. In this simple story of a Chinese farmer may be found something of the soul of China. Its humility, its courage, its deep heritage from the past and its vast promise for the future." This means that an empire's greatness can also be measured by the life of its poorest people, and from this you can tell its character and where the empire is going. The Good Earth is an accurate reproduction of China during the Song and Tang Dynasties. The role of the family was completely represented in both the film and the book. The oldest male in the family is always greatly respected with filial piety. Filial piety was the the idea that elders should be respected and the older you were the wiser you were. In the beginning, Wang Lung bought an ugly slave for a wife because his wise father told him to. Wang Lung's respect for his father somewhat diminishes as his wealth increases and because of this he buys a second wife for his own pleasure. This shows that the Chinese society was predisposed against women and they were a disgrace to the family. The Good Earth shows the treatment, or mistreatment, of women accurately. O-Lan was treated badly by today's standards, but Wang Lung was kind to her compared many other husbands back then. Women in China were treated as slaves, they often worked in the fields, kept the house, and cared for the children. If a couple had a girl as a first child then there was a good chance that she would be killed because only men could earn good money. Some women had their feet bound to keep them small, this was thought to be attractive. If a woman's feet were bound then she could not be a slave or even walk properly on retarded feet. Rich men sometimes had two wives, one they bought for slave work and the other for beauty.
